Camp Avalon - August 22-26, 2010

The CLAS campers arrived shortly after lunch on Sunday and quickly set out to explore camp and meet the Shelburne campers.

Sunday afternoon passed quickly with games of washer toss and relaxing on the deck.  Following supper we were each presented with a paving stone, donated by Heritage Hall, the workshop where our camp mates work.  These were painted and will make lasting camp mementos.  Late evening passed relaxing by a log fire in the main cabin.

Canoes were delivered on Monday morning and we set off to explore the lake and island, leaving land lubbers behind on the shore.  The afternoon saw us all afloat, this time for a tour of Shelburne Harbor, aboard a long boat, an exact replica of those on “The Bounty” on which Captain Bligh was set a drift.  Following supper we painted a canvas banner of our camp activities.

During the camp we all assisted with serving meals, washing dishes and clean up.  The Host staff frequently remarked that our presence brought their residents out of their cabins and socializing more.  They are hoping that we will attend next year, maybe for the July camp too.

The latter part of Camp Avalon was great and enjoyed by all.  Tuesday brought a nail biting game of soccer baseball.  Wednesday was spent on the beach retrieving items to make centre pieces for the upcoming dance.  We also got to watch a seal having fun watching us.

The tropical dance Wednesday evening was a tremendous success.  From grass skirts, bright leis, pina colada’s (virgin of course) and great friends (some old, some new) it was a wonderful time enjoyed by all.

All campers are looking forward to camp next year!
